Former Dutch foreign minister Veldkamp will be new EU ambassador to China

Caspar Veldkamp with Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi in 2025

Former foreign minister of the Netherlands Caspar Veldkamp will become the next European Union ambassador to China. He is expected to take up his new position in Beijing this summer. He inherits the position from Spanish diplomat Jorge Toledo, who has held the position since 2022.

Mr. Veldkamp was Foreign Minister until 2025. Before entering government, he spent most of his career in the Dutch diplomatic service. He was the ambassador to Greece and Israel and also spent time in the US and Brussels. As he joins the EU delegation to China, he returns to diplomatic service in one of the most impactful diplomatic environments in the world.

We look forward to working together with Mr. Veldkamp and wish him good luck, cooperation through the EU-framework facilitates trade and improves the bargaining position of the Benelux. Working together with our European partners in the Chinese context is central to the Chamber’s activities.
